History is an important part of what makes our country what it is today. When visiting the East Coast, you’ll run into many historical outposts and museums because the 13 colonies were originally located in the same area. When you visit Depe Dene Family Lakeside Resort, you’ll be close to several history museums such as the Fort William Henry Museum that are worth a visit. Let us recommend a few for you to tour during your time in New York.

Fort William Henry Museum and Restoration

Brush up on your history before returning to the Fort William Henry Museum and Restoration. Although the original fort was burned down, a replica of the original was reconstructed in the 1950s so you can see how the British used the fort during the French and Indian War from 1755-1757. The Fort William Henry Museum has actors dressed in the garb and uniforms of the time to bring the place to life.

The Hyde Collection

This small art museum has a large collection of European and American art for its size. The famous artists featured here include Edgar Degas, Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso, and Rembrandt, to name a few. They also feature modern and contemporary art, if that’s more your speed.

Adirondack Folk School

Just a half-hour drive from Depe Dene is the Adirondack Folk School. Here, you can learn how to create hand-crafted goods by using old-school techniques. Enroll in half-day sessions for ceramics, gardening, fiber arts, soap making, leather crafting, metal arts, ceramics, and so much more. This way, you can return with a souvenir that you created yourself, something you can’t always do on vacation.

Fort Ticonderoga

A similar activity to visiting the Fort William Henry Museum is visiting Fort Ticonderoga, an hour’s drive from Depe Den. The fort was a vital point of access from the Hudson River Valley to Canada, and that’s why it was an important win for the Americans (or the rebels) in the Revolutionary War. When you visit, you’ll be able to see exhibits that feature weaponry during the revolutionary era, the chronology of everything that’s happened at Ticonderoga, art that highlights the role of Native Americans during the wars, and more.

Lake George Resorts

After a day of reading, remembering, and museum hopping, return to your cabin or cottage on Lake George with Depe Dene and blow off some steam. Take a dip in Lake George or the heated pool, and grab a bite at Lone Bull Restaurant.
